Setting environment variables
Hi all,
This is a difficulty I came across while installing a application in Ubuntu 8.10. I used to set all the environment variables in .bash_profile. But the installation manual of the application tell to set the env variables in /etc/profile. Pls let me know how to set env variables in /etc/profile. Is it as same as we do in .bash_profile. Also when an application looks for a particular env variable in which place it looks first? /etc/profile or .bash_profile?
cheers

Re: Setting environment variables
As far as I know /etc/profile will have settings for all the users. It's system configuration. If we need some variable to be effected upon only one user it will be or ~/.bash_profile.
This forum post contains some info regarding the process. (Like what about a login shell and not). And it will answer ur question abt "looking for environment variables".

And there is another interesting question regarding ubuntu environment variables. Better to read it too.
